Autonomous Systems: A Bibliometric and Patent Analysis

Overview

This project examines research and innovation system around the four important autonomous system: smart homes, smart factories, autonomous vehicles (in non-hostile environments), and autonomous vehicles in hostile environments. The project assesses German-affiliated publication and patent position relative to that for the US, China, Japan, South Korea and India over the 2002-2017 (May) period. Metadata from the Web of Science and Patstat (through Fall 2016) and Derwent Innovation Index are analyzed to compare shares of publications and patents from the focal countries, differences in topical emphasis, and citation and other measures of articles and patent documents. In addition, a summary of US patent laws and regulations at the state and national levels are provided. A key aspect of the project is the creation of a search strategy to define domain in the four target autonomous systems.
